During his years as a taxonomist and curator of the herpetological collection at the Natural History Museum of Holguín, Nils made significant contributions to Cuban herpetology through reptile inventories conducted across eastern Cuba, culminating in the description of new species for science. He continues working in ornithologic taxonomy generating important contribution to the avian taxonomy of the region.
