This initiative was born from the need to establish an official national platform that rigorously and continuously documents the list of bird species recorded in Cuba. Beyond compiling species records, it also incorporates specialized comments on the most recent changes in nomenclature, systematics, and taxonomy, as well as new additions and key clarifications within Cuban ornithology.
The lists are published annually, generally between January and February, through Ediciones Nuevos Mundos, reflecting the latest advances in the field. Each edition includes an introduction explaining the categories used, followed by a main table containing all species that make up the Cuban avifauna. The publication is further complemented by tables of unconfirmed or escaped species, as well as a list of fossil birds corresponding to the Pleistocene–Holocene period.
The core of the work lies in its commentary sections, where the scientific basis supporting each taxonomic change or new addition is presented, together with relevant observations for researchers and bird enthusiasts. In addition, a summary table with numerical indicators of interest is included to facilitate analysis and consultation.
Designed under a practical and accessible approach, the publication adopts a print-on-demand formatIt also stands out for its unique covers, illustrated with photographs contributed by invited Cuban authors, while the back cover (redesigned in 2026, see below) features a map of Cuba highlighting key birdwatching sites along with illustrated endemic species

This project forms part of the broader process of developing a new field guide to the birds of Cuba and generally requires between two and three months of continuous work.
