Birds of the Los Colorados Archipelago (Eastern section).

Nils is part of the team working within the Managed Resources Protected Area “Este del Archipiélago Los Colorados,” located along the northern coast of Pinar del Río Province. Officially established in 2021, this protected area lies within one of the least studied archipelagos in Cuba.

As an ornithology specialist, he has contributed his expertise to the development of the first comprehensive bird inventory for the region, documenting a total of 168 bird species, including 14 Cuban endemics. His work has focused on identifying priority species for conservation, as well as studying the nesting ecology of species such as the Gundlach´s Hawk and the Least Tern. The research also led to the discovery of important nesting colonies, communal roosting sites, and a significant migratory corridor used by raptors during migration seasons.

All of this work was made possible through the support of BirdsCaribbean via the “James Kushlan Research and Conservation Fund.” Research on the avifauna of this important protected area is currently ongoing.
